PIRAEUS PORT AND ITS GROWING ART SCENE
The Munchies Art Club went to Athens for a short trip and was excited to finally get the opportunity to visit three prominent galleries in the harbor area called Piraeus.
Take the time to discover the art scene in the Ancient Greek port, developing steadily into a new contemporary cultural hub.
We visited the exceptional galleries Rodeo, Intermission and Carwan all located on just one small warehouse filled street, a block away from the port.
This small street just off the bustling port of Piraeus, first became famous for harboring one of the best wine bars in town.
The Paleo Wine bar was later followed by the galleries, bringing a new art and cultural scene to life.
RODEO GALLERY | PIRAEUS
The Rodeo Gallery is a contemporary art gallery with spaces in London and Piraeus.
The gallery was first established in Istanbul by the incredible Sylvia Kouvali in 2007. Sylvia Kouvali is best known in the art industry as owning the Midas touch and is admired for her visions and projects internationally.
In 2014 the Rodeo opened in London, after closing the Istanbul gallery. First located in Soho, the gallery recently moved to Mayfair. The London gallery was followed by the gallery in Piraeus, in 2018.
The Rodeo gallery offers a selection of international and Greek contemporary artists in its space, which was formerly a warehouse, and redesigned for the gallery by the Swiss architect Etienne Descloux.

On our visit, the gallery was representing the artist Cooper Jacoby and his representing French Fitzpatrick Gallery.
Artemis Baltoyiannis’ exciting concept invites the artists along with their galleries to create shows for her audience at the Piraeus space.
Artemis Baltoyianni organizes collaborations with galleries globally including them in her visions of a developing Piraeus art scene.

CARWAN GALLERY | PIRAEUS
The contemporary design gallery Carwan was founded 2011 in Beirut, Lebanon. In 2020 the architect and curator Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte, and the architect Quentin Moyse settled with their gallery in Piraeus, Greece. There, just a short walking distance from the lively harbor, they took over an old warehouse on the Polidefkous street, which they renovated together, preserving as much as they possibly could from its original state.
Today the Carwan Gallery is a key player amongst the top design galleries world wide. It focuses on promoting and producing avant-garde design from the near east regions and beyond. Carwan focuses on cross-cultural collaborations, between architects, artists, designers, cultural organizations, institutions, specialized press, collectors and patrons. Participating at important design and art fairs globally, including Dubai, Basel, London and Miami, as well as museums and art centers.
